Your ultimate media platform: process, convert, ingest, transcode, QC, archive, playout, and publish. Built for media-intensive workflows. Scalable, data-centric solution. Whether you’re deploying a full workflow pipeline or a select subsystem of your choice. Designed for cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments.

Introduction to the Vowos Composer Framework

Overview

Asset acquisition, curation, storage, management, transmission and streaming/VOD. Designed to implement and develop your vision of a media intensive workflow. A scale-out solution that provides an integrated tool for deploying an end-to-end workflow - or a subsystem of your choice.

VOWOS COMPOSER incorporates the flexibility of enterprise asset logistics and management, video processing, playout automation, and the power and robustness of a modern, integrated video server and signal processor. We work with the three basic models:

On-premises model is a fully hosted solution with no cloud infrastructure. Focusing on scalable, flexible and customisable channel demands. It is a turnkey solution with high-end broadcast I/o.

Hybrid model is a cloud based solution with the playout taking place in the client’s premises.  Integrates best of the two worlds: high-end broadcasting with cloud, remote operations.

Virtualised model is: fully available from anywhere, allows to save on physical infrastructure, act as a disaster recovery tool or a complementary solution to the product portfolio that drive the revenue of your organisation.

Supporting own, commercial and open source video processing hardware. Vowos has designed its own video processing platform but is also capable of working with commercial products such as Evertz Overture or open source CasparCG. We have a unique integration interface allowing us to easily connect and control third party solutions.

Industry formats, codecs, wrappers. Vowos works with all established  broadcast standards. We even support Apple ProRes, Avid’s DNx*, and the heavy XAVC with hardware accelerated encoding/decoding. Whatever the future challenge - we are ready.

Core Components and Their Roles:

Vowos Proxy Server (Device Control Server):
The Vowos Proxy Server is sophisticated middleware that serves as the nexus between control applications and system functional units, facilitating seamless connections across the Vowos ecosystem. Acting as a database-driven framework, it defines and bridges Vowos applications with precision and reliability. The proxy provisioner empowers users with direct access to the Microsoft SQL database, creating an aggregation layer that fosters an ecosystem-like integration within the vowos media processing environment.

Distributed Fileserver:
The Vowos Distributed Fileserver is a high-performance network solution engineered for rapid media transfer, management, and content logistics. This technology streamlines asset retrieval, manipulation, and exchange through both automated and manual processes, enhancing content logistics, transcoding, and file registration within the Vowos framework. Supporting select third-party applications, the fileserver’s integrated transcoding and syntactic QC capabilities provide a fluid and efficient workflow for asset management.

Vowos XMV Asset Curator:
Tailored for professional-grade media workflows, the Vowos XMV Asset Curator offers robust tools for manual processing, visual quality control, and time-based metadata management. Designed for precision, XMV enables you to curate, play via SDI/ST2110, inspect, annotate, and quality-check media with ease. Integrated with automated QC systems (like Vidchecker and Baton), XMV provides a unified solution for content ingest and processing. Define content durations, identify ad break points, view LUFS/loudness levels, preview different HDR settings, transcode, and export to cloud-based platforms, with seamless MAM and CMS integration. XMV supports SD/HD/UHD all up to Sony XAVC and Panasonic AVC Ultra hardware-enhanced decoding.

Video Processing Platforms:
This comprehensive suite of software and hardware empowers Vowos playout, ingest, and MAM functions, as well as third-party control layer to servers such as Evertz ORT or the  CasparCG. Running on a combination of high-end Matrox broadcast I/O hardware and virtualized environments, Vowos supports multiple broadcast standards (ST2110, SDI, SPTS), alongside HLS, NDI, RTMP, SRT, RIST, and more. It’s designed to meet the most demanding workflow requirements with flexible and robust configurations. Not a video server, a video processor with advanced graphics and heterogeneous output.

Integration Interfaces:
Vowos integration interfaces offer a broad range of control capabilities for both software and hardware devices, including Character Generators, GPI, Routers, Subtitlers, VDCP, M2100, and more. Engineered to the highest standards of mainframe automation, these interfaces deliver seamless operation and cost-efficiency. Additionally, the Vowos component package includes a versatile suite of tools for digital archive integration, distributed file management, CDN exports, and cloud-based transcoding.

Vowos Console - Operator’s Interface:
The Vowos Console is a dynamic “soft client” user interface that connects effortlessly in networked environments, providing operators unrestricted access to system services. Designed for power and flexibility, a single Vowos Console can simultaneously manage multiple server connections (file, playout, ingest, and more), ensuring easy and limitless control over the entire Vowos system.

AUTOMATED MEDIA PROCESSING AND LOGISTICS

DISTRIBUTED FILESERVER

Distributed Fileserver Framework
The Vowos Distributed Fileserver is a high-performance network solution engineered for high-speed media transfer (media object logistics), management, and content processing. This technology streamlines asset retrieval, manipulation, processing, and exchange through both automated and manual processes, enhancing content logistics, transcoding, and file registration within the Vowos database systems. Supporting select third-party applications, the fileserver’s integrated transcoding and QC capabilities provide a fluid and efficient workflow for asset management.

System consists of the following components:

    • Distributed Fileserver Services
    • Asset mover services
    • Asset processor services
    • Archive Importer Application
    • XMV manual media inspector, QC and manipulator
    • System database
    • Dedicated UI available through the Vowos Console

Vowos Distributed Fileserver is a file management system that spans across multiple storage locations, such as file servers that are situated in different physical places. Files are accessible from any device and from anywhere on the network. Our file manipulation framework makes it convenient to share information and files among users on a network in a controlled and authorized way. It is critical in situations where you need:

    • Transparent local access — Data to be accessed as if it’s local to the user for high performance.
    • Location independence — No need for users to know where file data physically resides.
    • Scale-out capabilities — The ability to scale out massively by adding more machines.
    • Fault tolerance — A need for your system to continue operating properly even if some of its servers are off - handle such situations by spreading data across multiple machines.

Install an agent on each server or VM that monitors file events and then take action when something relevant occurs. This can be done without requiring file locking, and the agent monitoring is not in the data path. Operating on audio, video and metadata  files from different locations is a common practice now and solutions such the vowos Distributed Fileserver make this practical. Among many features of the systems are: MD5 calculation for large video assets, pause and resume from the paused moment file transfers, priority-based queues, interfaces to scp, sftp and other storage locations, extensive logging and status reporting, manipulation of file parameters, delivery to remote locations (CDN, cloud encoders and packagers), working on media objects rather than individual files based on the media object paradigm, content transcoding options, and other features that have made the vowos Distributed Fileserver a must-have in playout, ingest and OTT/VOD environments.
